Top School District’s AI Policies

Weekly summary

Recent coverage has focused on earlier actions by large districts such as Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) in California and New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) in New York, both of which implemented student-facing generative AI restrictions ahead of the 2026-27 school year. Analyses of New York state districts show most lack formal board-adopted AI policies, with around 270 having some form of guidance. Smaller districts like Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) in Maryland enacted broader bans in early October following pilot programs.

A live snapshot of how the largest U.S. K–12 schools districts publicly govern AI. Values come from district portals, board policies, and reporting — not vendor marketing.

Methodology

How the snapshot is coded

  • Ranking treats New York City Public Schools as one system (#1) and includes Hawaiʻi DOE as the statewide LEA. Charter networks are excluded unless they appear on standard largest-LEA lists.
  • “Public AI policy” means a dedicated GenAI / AI guidance page, guidebook, or board policy — not a generic AUP with no AI language.
  • Weak evidence usually means no page found, not a proven ban. Florida districts without local policy still face statewide AI rules for 2027–28.
  • This page is research reference, not legal advice. Cells refresh from primary sources; check the linked policy before relying on a value.
